Zachary Richard, chanteur cadien reconnu, part sur une quête pour questionner la pertinence de l’identité acadienne et la résilience de sa culture française. Il retrace le parcours fascinant de ses ancêtres, en parcourant les régions acadiennes aux provinces maritimes du Canada et en Louisiane aux Etats-Unis, cherchant à comprendre comment l’Histoire a façonné sa culture.

Zachary fait d’étonnantes découvertes sur ses ancêtres Richard et Boudreaux qui ont habité la colonie d’Acadie (au Canada) pendant un siècle et demi. Il visite pour la première fois les anciens villages de ses ancêtres, puis les trois camps de réfugiés où ses ancêtres ont fui pendant les déportations des Britanniques de 1755 à 1763. Finalement capturés et emprisonnés sur l’Île George à Halifax, ses ancêtres furent de la première migration massive vers la Louisiane.

Dans une Louisiane considérablement métissée aujourd’hui avec diverses cultures, Zachary interroge son entourage cadien sur la pertinence de l’appartenance à ses racines. Malgré les nombreux événements douloureux de son histoire, le « batailleur » Zachary arrivera-t-il à se réconcilier avec son passé pour pardonner et se tourner vers l’avenir ?

World-renowned Cajun singer Zachary Richard embarks on a journey to explore his Acadian-Cajun identity and the resilience of French culture in North America. Zachary traces the footsteps of his ancestors in Canada and the USA, seeking to understand how this fascinating and little-known history created his contemporary Acadian-Cajun culture.

Zachary makes new discoveries about his ancestors, the Richard’s and the Boudreaux’s, who lived for 150 years in the Acadie colony (located in today’s Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick provinces in Canada).  He walks for the first time in their lost villages as well as in the three refugee camps where they fled during the British deportations of 1755-1763. Eventually captured and imprisoned in Halifax, his family was part of the first massive Acadian migration south to Louisiana.

In modern Louisiana, characterised by a mixed and diverse culture, Zachary questions his Cajun milieu about the relevance of their Acadian ancestry. Will Zachary be able to reconcile himself with the painful events of his family’s Acadian history in order to forgive and focus on the future?
